ABOUT THE JUNIOR GIRLS

COMMITMENT TO FEMALE FOOTBALL
The Blackburn Football Club is a long-time supporter of girls playing football. In 2017, we celebrate our:

  • 11th year of actively promoting girls playing football
  • 6th year of hosting all-girls teams.

OUR PROGRAM
Our program goes far beyond simply fielding girls teams:

  • In 2015 we launched Blackburn Girls Auskick the only Auskick centre exclusively for girls in the City of Whitehorse.
  • We have been running a series of school clinics including those for Blackburn, Blackburn Lake, St Thomas’, Laburnum, Mt Pleasant, Kingswood and Orchard Grove Primaries, as well as Blackburn, Box Hill and Forest Hill Secondary Colleges.
  • We run school holiday skill clinics just for girls.
  • In 2014 we hosted the Blackburn District Primary School Sports Association Girls Footy Day. This has expanded further in 2016 to include the Nunawading District Primary School Sports Association with more than 400 primary school girls all playing footy at Morton Park in 2016 and planned for 2017 as well.

In 2017, we estimate that we will have more than 500 girls, primarily from the City of Whitehorse participating in our various programs. We have also developed a partnership with the Eastern Devils, one of the leading women’s clubs, to now provide girls with a pathway from Auskick, through our junior program, to seniors and eventually the AFL.

    A PROGRAM OF SUCCESS
Our program has enjoyed considerable success. We have produced some talented players and coaches with our players selected in State representative teams for the past six years.

    In 2016 we had:

    • Three players in the Vic Metro State Under 18 team, including its captain
    • Five players in the State Under 15’s team.
    • Nine players at the Dandenong Stingrays and Sandringham Dragons
    • Numerous players in the YJFL Interleague team.

In 2015 our Under 15s won the YJFL Premiership with their coach awarded AFL Female Coach of the Year. This is on top of our inaugural coach taking out the regional coach of the year award.

    WE’RE SERIOUS
With the AFL’s establishment of a national competition in 2017, female football has become a serious proposition.  Blackburn is equally serious about developing a strong girls’ football program.
