THE BURNERS BULLETIN
PRESIDENT’S OFFICE
I would also like to thank our outgoing newsletter guru Mike McCoy for his many years of information sharing for our club. Mike has spent years tapping away each week, keeping all informed, I know he is happy to hand this over to Dan & Ben, allowing him time to concentrate further on club treasury duties.
SENIOR MEN
Pre-Season kicked off for our 1-3 year senior players on the 8th of November and we saw a strong turnout from our up and coming talent. The younger boys were looking fit and ready to go. The standouts are ruckman Lachy Harry, intercept marking defender Connor Hinkley and inside midfielder Lachy Bugeja, all returning trim, strong and they are running on top of the ground. Graduates from last year 19’s in Louis Downie, Charlie Oglethorpe, Kieran Hubber and Kristian Zellic have all impressed as well.
TOM MAHER – MARATHON MAN
On December 12th I’ll be participating in the Melbourne Marathon to help my workplace (Simbuilt) raise money for the Very Special Kids foundation, who help provide care and support for kids with life-threatening diseases.
SENIOR WOMEN
We’ve kicked off our pre-Christmas training block at the state of the art facilities at Monash University. Currently we’re training Mon’s and Wed’s, from 7.30-9pm. We are getting some great numbers with approximately 80% of players already having attended. Considering the lockdown, we’re looking pretty strong too!
PLAYER PROFILE – Mia Chadwick
I think it was 2016 and a friend from basketball who was a good mate invited me to play with her at Blackburn. Which was great because I wanted to play for a few years, but I was too nervous because I didn’t know anyone in a team. Once I knew someone I was more comfortable, plus I found another girl I know also played for BFC.
PRESENTATION NIGHT
The Club’s Best & Fairest was held in the fabulous new Club Social Rooms last Friday Night.
In what was a relatively low-key (social) event, due to a short planning timeline, players and volunteers enjoyed the chance to come together and reflect on what was a successful overall performance of our Senior Teams.
LIFE MEMBERS – Darren Adey and Tom Cooper
This is the second year that Darren has been nominated for Life Membership. This year he received three nominations.
Darren’s contribution to the BFC has been with both the Junior and Senior Clubs.
VALE TONY MORRIS
Sad to report the recent passing of Tony Morris, a long-time club supporter, volunteer, and father of 2 life member sons, Terry and Brendan. Tony will be mostly remembered as a member of the Friday crew that would mark the lines, fill the fridges, cut the onions for the BBQ of a Saturday, clean all the rooms and toilets, and anything else that needed doing – before settling down for a well-deserved beer or 2!!. The other main stayers were Ron “Geeza” Eade, John Reid (dec), and Ian “Macca” McCarty.
THE OFFICEWORK
The Senior Men/Women and Under 19.5’s EFNL Registration Fees and Player Season fees (see below) have now been added to the GameDay portal.
ALL Players can now go online for direct payment access for EFNL Player Registration and Club Annual fees in one easy transaction.
Burners TV
The latest from The Casey and McCoy show is live bringing you up to date with all off-season movements at The Blackburn Footy Club. From Men’s and Women’s Training reviews to new committee members, cash giveaways, new players, new membership packages, and the Big One –
Friday Night Footy is coming to Morton Park!”
Two Legends Fighting Fit
Great to see Club legend Ron “Geeza” Eade back at the Pit last Saturday after a long rehab following a fall and major leg break back in June. Whilst wheelchair-bound these days, Geeza was in good spirits and in good health after recently moving into an aged care facility in Box Hill. Joining Ron and having his first look at the new clubrooms was 96-year-old Alan Walker, who played for the Burners back in the 40s and 50s and played with Geeza in our 1950 senior premiership team. It was certainly a journey back in history as these 2 old burners shared stories of life and footy over 70 years ago.
Morton Park Lights Up
In preparation for Friday Night Footy at Morton Park, the 150 Lux Lights were given their maiden run on Thursday night. Somebody in the know happened to be wandering past and taking a few pics. For more sneaky snapshots read more.
Senior Men’s Update – Practice Matches
Training is back in full swing for our Senior Men. “What’s his name?” is often heard from die-hard onlookers impressed by the enthusiasm and intent of our new brigade. Introducing new names and faces will come thick and fast in the coming weeks as we look forward to our pre-season schedule.
BFC Marketplace
As we welcome new and improved facilities at Morton Park, we have a heap of used goods from our previous clubrooms that are looking for new homes. If you know anyone interested in Commercial Kitchen Equipment, Gym gear, Bar Furniture, or you need a TV, this is the time.
Men’s Preseason Camp
This year’s footy camp saw the lads venture down to The Summit Camp in Trafalgar. Friday night involved discussions on team values, leadership, and expectations for the year. Saturday morning started with a solid PT session, followed by the Summit Team leading four rotational activities including the Leap of Faith, Snowy River Challenge, Laser Skirmish, and the Summit Window. A real test for several of the lads, both physically and mentally. A workshop followed with discussions on getting the best out of themselves and what is needed both individually and as a collective to be successful on and off the field. The arrow challenge was a highlight of this session. A grueling obstacle course followed before an evening of fun and friendly banter.
Senior Men’s Leaders Announced
On the back of the camp and our Leadership workshop, the player group was canvassed on their choice of leaders for 2022 and the club captain for 2022.
